C9 DOMESTIC BANKING FEES CHARGED

Data are compiled based on annual returns collected by APRA from banks that have $10 billion of total assets or more.

Data are not break adjusted for the transition between the current and previous collection.

Fees charged on deposit accounts include all fees associated with deposits, including exception fees charged and fees charged on offset accounts.

Fees charged on loans include all fees associated with loan accounts and finance leases, including fees on redraw facilities.

‘Businesses’ means community service organisations, non-financial businesses and financial institutions. These exclude fees charged to households and general government.

Total fees charged includes fees charged to household, business and general government counterparties.

Merchant Service fees are fees charged to businesses for providing payment processing services. These include per-transaction fees associated with accepting debit and credit card payments, as well as non-transaction fees associated with the provision of terminal facilities.

‘Other’ fees charged to households and businesses include all banking-related fees charged other than fees charged associated with deposits, loans, finance leases and merchant fees charged. These can include export collection fees, certain foreign exchange fees, guarantees, fees for the transmission of deed or documents, fees for custodial and safe deposit boxes etc. For businesses this also includes fees from bank bills of exchange.

‘Exception fees’ are pre-determined charges that are imposed in the event of a breach of contract by the customer, typically by making a late payment or exceeding a credit limit on a credit card or by overdrawing a deposit account.
