Investment, capital stock and capital services of physical assets, by industry [36100210]

The table provides data that are used by the Canadian Productivity Accounts (CPA) to estimate capital input for the multifactor productivity growth measures. Capital input reflects the services that flow from the stock of capital. It is estimated as the weighted sum of capital stock using the user cost of capital as weights across different types of assets. This differs from the stock of capital sometimes used in productivity measurement because not all forms of capital provide services at the same rate, just as not all hours worked provide labour services at the same rate. Short-lived assets, such as a car or computer, must provide all of their services in just the few years before they completely depreciate. Office buildings provide their services over decades. So, in a year, a dollar's worth of a car provides relatively more services than a dollar's worth of a building. Because of differences in capital services between assets, capital input can increase not only because investment increases the amount of the capital stocks, but also if investment shifts toward assets-such as equipment-that provide relatively more services per dollar of capital stock. A description of the method used to derive the measure is offered online in the publication The Canadian Productivity Review: "User Guide for Statistics Canada's Annual Multifactor Productivity Program" (15-206-XIE2007014, free), available from the Publications module of our website. Capital stock is calculated using the perpetual inventory method assuming geometric depreciation pattern. Capital input of an asset reflects the services that flow from the stock of the asset. It is estimated as the weighted sum of capital stock using the user cost of capital as weights across different types of the asset. For example, capital input of information and communication technologies machinery and equipment is estimated from data on computer hardware, software, and communication equipment. Capital cost represents the surplus-profits, depreciation, rent, and net interest-intended as compensation to the owners of capital. Capital cost of an asset is calculated as the sum of cost of capital across different types of the asset. Information and communication technologies machinery and equipment consists of computer hardware, software and telecommunication equipment. Those assets are machinery equipment other than computer hardware, software and telecommunication equipment. Engineering assets provide the foundation capital for railways, utilities, oil and gas, and pipelines. This combines the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes 111-112.
