Prior to 1983, Canadian banks' equity in foreign subsidiaries and associates is included in deposits assets. From 1983 onwards, Canadian banks' equity in foreign subsidiaries and associates is included in direct investment assets under equity. Prior to 1983, short-term inter-company assets are included in other accounts receivable and short-term inter-company liabilities are included in other accounts payable. From 1983 onwards, short-term intercompany assets are included in direct investment assets under debt instrument and short-term inter-company liabilities are included in direct investment liabilities under debt instrument. Prior to 2002, foreign money market instruments are included in other accounts receivable. From 2002 onwards, foreign money market instruments are included in Canadian portfolio investment. From 1995 onward, the repurchase agreements (REPO's) asset position on Canadian and foreign securities is included in loans assets and the liability position is included in loans liabilities. Prior to 1995, REPO's on Canadian bonds are included in Canadian bonds. Data on loans are presented net of any allowances applicable to them. Prior to 1987, other long term liabilities of corporations are included under loan liabilities. From 1987 onward, other long term liabilities of corporations are included under other accounts payable. European Union (EU) countries excluding the United Kingdom includes currently Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain; from January 1995, includes Austria, Finland, and Sweden; from May 2004, Cyprus, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia; from January 2007, Bulgaria and Romania; from July 2013, Croatia. Other Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries includes currently Australia, Iceland, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey; from July 1994 Mexico; from December 1995 up to April 2004, Czechia; from May 1996 up to April 2004, Hungary; from November 1996 up to April 2004, Poland; from December 1996, Republic of Korea; from January 2001 up to April 2004, Slovakia; up to December 1994, Austria, Finland and Sweden; from May 2010, Chile; from April 2020, Colombia. This series presents direct investment on an asset/liability basis. Beginning January 2021, the United Kingdom ceased to be covered by trade agreements negotiated by the European Union. Since the data for the United Kingdom is presented separately in this table, the values for the European Union exclude those of the United Kingdom for all reference periods and regardless of the membership status of the United Kingdom in the European Union.
